One-year Campaign on Constituent Assembly and Loktantra Concluded
November 25, 2007
HRERLIC Nepal has been conducting awareness programmes on human rights, social justice and youths in the rural areas of Nepal since 1998. After the success of Jana Andolan II, HRERLIC has focused its campaigns on burning issues like Constituent Assembly (CA) and Loktantra. Seeing the need to inform people in the rural parts of Nepal about the importance of CA and loktantra even after the establishment of Loktantra, HRERLIC has launched the one-year campaign. HRERLIC launched the campaign through its local clubs, district and national committee keeping in view that until the people in rural parts are made aware of loktantra and CA, loktantra would not be sustainable and the goal visioned by CA would not be accomplished.
The one-year campaign that started from Kohalpur of Banke in 25 November 2006 ended after reaching Taplejung. During this one year, 55 awareness programmes were conducted across the country. Gau chautari, discussions, interactions, rallies, wall paintings, newspaper publishing, trainings, vote surveying were among the programmes that were conducted. Except these, trainings on loktantra, CA election system, and federal system were also given to students of secondary schools and +2 students under the school awareness programme. Programmes focusing on illiterates, women, dalits and people from backward community were conducted as they were planned.
In order to inform Kathmandu denizens, a street play 'Khabardari' was staged and a training was organized for people of Bhaktapur. National Committee organized a training on 'Vote surveying and role of youths in CA' with a view to understand the youth's interest in CA. Various peace rallies organized in Morang, Dang, Banke and Chitwan had helped to calm the rising communal tensions and violence in the Tarai.
More than 55,000 people from rural regions were made aware about loktantra and CA after the one-year campaign was launched. They are conscious about their rights. At a time when only city oriented programmes are conducted, HRERLIC has successfully managed to conduct programmes in villages.
